Synergistic Approach to Overcome Global Palm Oil Challenges
Dr. Rizal Affandi Lukman

Dr. Rizal Affandi Lukman is currently the Secretary General of Council of Palm Oil Producing Countries (CPOPC). He was a past Deputy Minister for International Economic Cooperation at the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs, the Republic of Indonesia with main role to oversees the coordination and harmonization of government policies related to international economic cooperation in multilateral, regional and bilateral forum. During his tenure as the Deputy Minister, he was also appointed by the President of the Republic of Indonesia as Indonesia’s Sherpa in G20 forum. Previously he worked at the Presidential Palace Office, serving as Assistant to the Private Secretary of the 6th President of the Republic of Indonesia, Dr. Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.

He was also served as Indonesia’s Senior Official in numerous bilateral cooperation frameworks such as with Japan, China, South Korea, Russia and Singapore as well as regional and sub-regional cooperation such as APEC, ASEAN, IMT-GT and BIMP-EAGA cooperation and has experience as a commissioner in various state-owned enterprises (PT. Krakatau Wajatama, PT. Pertamina Hulu Energy, and Perum Peruri).

He also has written various articles for academic journals, mostly in the topic of Economic Affairs, Poverty and Inequality, Monetary, Finance, and Management. He is also an active speaker in various domestic and international workshops and seminars.

VIEW PROFILE
Palm oil industry faces many future challenges which inevitably requires effective international collaboration. A synergistic approach involving variety of actors is crucial for the industry especially in addressing negative perception of palm oil, one of the relentless issues. This approach needs a dedicated joint platform aiming at integrating, facilitating, and bridging the global palm oil stakeholders' on issues of common concern.

Some of the focuses include the strengthened alliance of palm oil producing countries to mitigate challenges and maximize opportunities particularly in joint positive campaigns, engagement with government of consuming countries and their stakeholders to garner consumers’ needs which is instrumental for policy improvement, constructive dialogue engaging multi-stakeholders of palm oil producing and consuming countries, and engagement with multilateral organizations especially with the United Nations and its specialized agencies to open exchange of views and possible partnership in promoting palm oil.
