VIEW PROFILE
Oils and fats are staple products in the diet of Egyptian consumers. Egypt is the world’s seventh-largest importer of oils and fats, and is more dependent on supplies from outside the country. The domestic production of oils and fats in Egypt has not been able to satisfy the local demand. For many years now, the local production of oils and fats has not gone beyond the 400,000 tons level, which resulted in lower self-sufficiency rates, thus higher imports of edible vegetable oils. As for domestic production of oils, the most important of which are soybean, sunflower, and cotton, while Palm oil continues to maintain its competitive position in Egypt for both human consumption (mainly Ghee) and industrial use (mainly Soap) because of its relatively low price compared to other vegetable oils. Egypt has undergone dramatic political changes since 2011. Until now the Egyptian economy is passing through a political turmoil. However analysts expected that the confidence will be restored in Egypt's economy soon.
